Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Radio remains one of the most effective mass communication tools in influencing public opinion, especially in rural communities. In Ankpa LGA, Kogi State, radio call-in programs have become a cornerstone of participatory communication, providing a platform for community members to voice their concerns, share opinions, and engage with policymakers and experts. These programs address various topics, including governance, health, education, and social issues, creating an avenue for interactive dialogue that shapes public perceptions and behaviors. The immediacy and accessibility of call-in programs allow for real-time feedback, making them a powerful tool for fostering community participation and addressing local concerns (Okeke & Yusuf, 2023). However, the effectiveness of these programs in shaping public opinion depends on factors such as program content, audience engagement, and the credibility of hosts and contributors.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the popularity of radio call-in programs in Ankpa LGA, their impact on shaping public opinion remains unclear. Issues such as low literacy levels, language barriers, and limited airtime may hinder their effectiveness. Furthermore, biased moderation and insufficient follow-up on discussed issues might reduce their credibility and influence. This study investigates the effectiveness of radio call-in programs in shaping public opinion in Ankpa LGA and identifies ways to optimize their impact.
